It
should be known that mind exerts great influence on the body for the spirit
that works through the primordial material essence of mind is endowed
with great energy. The ancient Siddhars knew the scientific truth by their
meditation and worked wonders through their mental force.
The
Siddha system of medicine has been evolved from a study of the special
characteristics of the physical constitution of the people of south India
not to speak of that portion consulting the Tamil continent which was
submerged in the sea and the medicines prescribed in that Science are
such herbs, pulps and roots peculiar to this country and in abundance
and agreeable to the nature of the food suitable to their constitution
and which the people are accustomed to.
The
Indian customs and habits as well as the Indian climate are quite unsuitable
to Allopathic Medicine as for instance, the use of several tinctures and
spirits in every doses of medicine, means a great strain on the liver
and the kidney; and this may in itself lead to various diseases. The several
millions of south Indians were saved by our method for hundred of centuries
and are still being saved in rural parts under Siddha system in spite
of the modern introduction of Ayurveda and the Western system. The siddha
system especially at the present day is fast dying out for want of encouragement
and Research and many of the South Indian pharmaceutical factories formerly
in existence in Mysore, Tanjore, Andra District etc., for supply of chemicals
and drugs were all closed up owing to the passing of the poisons act by
the British Govt.
Siddha
works contain very useful informations that are absent in printed works.
The whole work must be thoroughly analyzed with a view to enunciate the
scientific principles underlying the system. The growing younger generations
do not seem to show any interest towards ancient science of Siddhars simply
because, the humanitarian side of Indian intellectual life, has of late,
received materialistic baptism under the influence of Western culture
and civilization producing at the same time, the inevitable result of
natural contempt for out literatures, science, art and culture. The real
cause of retrogression of the Indian systems as a whole is to be found
in the callous indifference of the State towards them.
Firstly
our Siddha theories have stood and survived the test of hundred of centuries,
and so we are opinion that it cannot be rejected as in the case of theories
of other systems, by modern scientists, excepts the theory of Karmic diseases
which is far away from the reach of the Western science. In order to produce
the desired effect medicines should be prepared in strict accordance with
rules laid down in Tamil works. We generally follow the preparations adopted
by our forefathers or our Gurus in Tamil works. So, individual merit and
scholarship has to be recognized and handled over from Guru to his disciple.
