| The
science of pulse was complied in Tamil by eighteen Siddhars. When a man
falls ill, this science is useful for diagnosing the disease and for determining
through pulsation [feeling with the fingers] the nature and other characteristics
of the disease. Therefore some knowledge of pulse is always essential and
useful to the physicians for adopting prophylactic and preventive steps
in time. Although physicians learn more about the non-essential or accessory
factors or signs of the disease, yet they are entirely in the dark as to
the exact nature of the disease inside the body, which alone is really beneficial
from a therapeutic point of view. Diagnosis of the disease by means of the
pulse is not so easy and it requires great skill and experience before it
can be of any real value to the physician. Nadi pulsation itself is a separate
science. It is mostly taught by the specialists on the subject and privately
by a Guru to his disciple. Men of great experience alone can explain the
various factors in regard to the pulse and this is the reason why this subject
of pulse is not at all included in the books of the subsequent writers explicably
but quietly omitted.
The
various character and conditions of the pulse beat communicate to the
fingers of the experienced physician, the sign of health and disease,
just in the same way as the wires of a violin does to musician, the different
notes when pressed by his fingers. Even the foreign authorities acknowledge
the difficulty of the method in this area. The three fingers fore, middle
and the ring fingers showing respectively the Vatha, Pitta and Kapha indicate
the three divisions in the pulse. This may be roughly compared to the
three parts of a normal Sphygmographic tracings the upstroke, the notch
or the tidal wave and the down stroke.
So,
the object of the pulsation or the feeling of pulse for prognosis and
diagnosis is to find out the state of the three Doshas and their variations
in their natural character. It should be remembered that the pulse is
the indication about the state of the heart and other Doshas. The feeling
of the pulse in cases of male and female - in male the right hand pulse
and in female the left one. The custom has at present degenerated like
the signs used as a prefix to all prescriptions of the modern scientist.
Originally, the method was based upon the knowledge and position of Koorma
Chakra one of the plexuses, probably the sympathetic systems of the modern
physiologists, who really know even now very little about this system.
So, there are two different methods of examining the redial pulse in man
and women.
Some
experts in this give out the exact nature of the disease to an astonishing
degree. Not only this they can even predict like astrologers as to whether
a disease in which a man is going to be afflicted with, is curable or
incurable and also predict his death. This is possible only in the Siddha
system of medicine, and here, it supersedes all other systems including
Ayurveda. A well-versed physician is one who is trained in the feeling
of pulse or examination of the movements of the pulse only and the one
arriving at the correct and accurate diagnosis by the pulse. The difficulty
of this authorities who concluded by remarking, If this test of pulse
is accepted, then some respects
Siddha
physicians have brought Medicine nearer and exact science than the west
has yet been able to do". |
